  1. A type of hydroelectric plant which uses
  2. surplus electricity to pump water back into a
  3. high-level reservoir. In normal working the
  4. water flows from this reservoir through the
  5. turbines to generate power for feeding into
  6. the national grid. At times of low power
  7. demand, electricity is taken from the grid to
  8. turn the turbines into pumps which then pump
  9. water back again. This ensures that there is
  10. always a maximum `head' of water in the
  11. reservoir to give the maximum output when
  12. required.
  13.
