A type of hydroelectric plant which uses
surplus electricity to pump water back into a
high-level reservoir. In normal working the
water flows from this reservoir through the
turbines to generate power for feeding into
the national grid. At times of low power
demand, electricity is taken from the grid to
turn the turbines into pumps which then pump
water back again. This ensures that there is
always a maximum `head' of water in the
reservoir to give the maximum output when
required.
